What is asphalt made of?

Asphalt is mostly comprised of aggregates, such as gravel, sand, or stone. The aggregates are held together with a binder made from bitumen, which is a byproduct of oil refining. Most asphalt is hot mix, which means that the aggregates and binder are blended at a high temperature and delivered to the site in a heated truck. Cold mix asphalt can be used for lightly traveled surfaces and emergency patching, but it is not as strong or durable as hot mix asphalt.
